Weapons play a significant role in the GTA series, forming an essential part of the gameplay and overall experience. And let’s be honest: without the various weapons and everyday objects that we can use to cause chaos, the open-world playground would be much slower.
It is therefore all the more important that we are once again provided with a wealth of different weapons in GTA 6.
Here are some reasons why weapons are important in the GTA series:
- Core gameplay: The GTA series is known for its open world where players have the freedom to do whatever they want. Weapons allow players to defend themselves in this world, complete missions, hijack vehicles and manage conflicts.
- Missions and tasks: Many missions and tasks in GTA games require the use of weapons. Players may have to defend themselves against enemies, take out gang members or complete other types of challenges that require the use of weapons.
- Self-defense and survival: There are many potential dangers in the open game world of GTA. Players can be attacked by other characters or the police. Weapons allow players to defend themselves and survive in dangerous situations.
- Variety and strategy: The GTA series offers a wide range of weapons, from firearms to melee weapons and explosive devices. This variety allows players to develop different strategies and choose the right weapon depending on the situation.
- Exploration and interaction: Players can explore the game world and interact with NPCs, which often involves the use of weapons. The sense of threat posed by weapons can lead to different reactions from NPCs and make the gaming experience more complex.
- Vehicles and vehicle theft: In many GTA games, players can hijack vehicles. They often have to drive away the driver or passengers at gunpoint in order to take control of the vehicle.
However, it is important to note that the use of weapons in the GTA series can also raise ethical and moral questions, as the game often depicts realistic violence. Players have different preferences on how they want to experience the game and can choose how they handle the weapons available.

Can I carry an unlimited number of weapons in GTA 6?
So far, Rockstar Games has not officially commented on the weapon system in GTA 6, but based on the leak, it is said to have been given a makeover.
Specifically, the Rockstar Universe portal states: “The inventory/weapon selection in Alan Wake 2 is reportedly very similar to GTA 6. You will be limited to the weapons you can carry, similar to Alan Wake 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2.”
This means that you would have to decide each time before a mission which weapons you want to carry with you or which would be useful for the respective situation. In Red Dead 2, for example, the firearms are stored in the saddlebags of your own horse, whereas in GTA 6 you could use your personal vehicle for this purpose.
Further confirmed weapon features in GTA 6
- You can use your weapons while swimming (but possibly only certain ones, such as the harpoon)
- There is an option to drop unused weapons on the spot. On the other hand, there is an animation to pick up weapons.
- You can change your hand when you are carrying or shooting a weapon.
- You can have a bag for loot, for example to carry loot and other weapons.
- There are additional item slots for painkillers, medikits and body armor.
How many weapons will there be in GTA 6?
There has been no official word on exactly how many weapons there will be in GTA 6. However, we do know that the number of weapons in the GTA series has grown steadily over the years.
We can therefore assume that GTA 6 will also include new weapons in addition to the many familiar ones.
For comparison, here is an overview of the number of weapons in the various GTA sequels:
- GTA 3: 12 weapons
- GTA Vice City: 33 weapons
- GTA San Andreas: 37 weapons
- GTA 4 + Episodes: 30 weapons
- GTA 5 (at release): 37 weapons
- GTA 5 + GTA Online: 98 weapons
- RDR2 (at release): 63 weapons
- RDR2 + Red Dead Online: 81 weapons
At the release of GTA 56, there were a total of 37 different weapons in the open-world title, but over the years Rockstar Games has released over 60 DLC weapons. It is possible that further updates will add more weapons by the time GTA 6 is released in 2025, breaking the barrier of 100 different weapons in one GTA installment.
